Police officer Saba Shawl is to take over as Kashmir’s first woman Jail Superintendent at the Central Jail in Srinagar. The facility houses at least 509 inmates. Ms. Shawl has already served in the administration department at the Central Jail in Kot Balwal, Jammu, and the Kupwara Jail. Ms. Shawl, who is a resident of Srinagar’s Peerbagh, qualified through the J&K Public Service Commission examination in 2012 for the post of Superintendent of Police (Prisons). She has a master’s degree in Social Work and was employed as the senior Community Development Consultant at the Government Polytechnic for Women, Bemina. Officials said Ms. Shawl framed correctional policies for prisoners and advocated for recreational programmes in prisons. Locals have hailed the move to appoint a female officer to run Srinagar Central Jail.
