The India Meteorological Department has in a press release said that the maximum temperature is likely to be above normal in most parts of the State during the summer season (March to May) this year. It has, therefore, issued certain advisory to the general public to avoid health complications owing to acute heatwave conditions. The advisory that the department has given to the public is as follows. Drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty, wear light, light-coloured, loose-fitting and cotton clothes and use sunglasses, an umbrella/hat, shoes, or sandals for protection when going out in the sun. Avoid strenuous activities when the outside temperature is high (working outside between noon and 3 p.m.), carry water with you while travelling and avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks that dehydrate the body. Eat hot food as much as possible, do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles and use homemade drinks like lemon water, buttermilk and ORS. Eat fruits and vegetables that are available during the season and have high water content like watermelon, oranges, grapes, pineapples and cucumbers. Green vegetables and fresh water should be consumed more often and if you feel like fainting or unwell, consult a doctor immediately.
