Encroachments, pollution pose threat to efforts to restore city’s waterbodies

Even as efforts to restore waterbodies gather pace on the city’s western outskirts, residents noted that long-standing problems such as encroachments and sewage discharge are resurfacing, threatening to undo the recent improvements.

With Avadi being vulnerable to inundation, various initiatives are in progress to rejuvenate waterbodies and improve the stormwater drain network. However, encroachments have emerged in waterbodies like Kovilpadagai and Sitheri, said residents.
