Five persons were arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) police in Salem on Sunday for collecting money from people promising long-term grocery supplies in exchange for upfront payments.

Following a tip-off that a Chennai-based company was collecting money from the public by promising to supply grocery items for 15 years if they pay ₹10 per day or ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 in a single payment, the EOW police rushed to the marriage hall at Salem New Bus Stand on Saturday and nabbed five persons. The police also seized ₹6 lakh that was collected from the public.
