In a significant step toward safer wildlife management, Vice-President (V-P) C. P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday launched a remote-controlled drone-based tranquillizer system designed to sedate rogue elephants and dangerous wild animals from a safe distance.

The innovative system, conceptualised by veterinary expert Dr P. B. Giridas, was unveiled at a function held at Devamatha School in Thrissur. The project, named Gajasthram, is financially supported by the Lakshmi Charitable Trust chaired by Thrissur MP and Union Minister Suresh Gopi.

The drone is equipped with a capture gun, tranquillizer syringe and medication, all operated remotely. Capable of functioning from a distance of up to 500 metres, the system ensures enhanced safety for wildlife experts, assisting personnel and the public during high-risk operations.

Integrated with a mobile-linked GPS system and camera, the device enables precision targeting and real-time monitoring. Officials said the technology would be particularly effective in dense forest regions and geographically challenging terrains where controlling wild animals is difficult.

Dr. Giridas, a member of the Central Elephant Care and Management Committee and an experienced elephant-darting expert, has been actively involved in tranquillization operations for nearly three decades.

Mr. Gopi expressed confidence that the system would be highly beneficial for Forest department experts and government elephant squad personnel engaged in wildlife control operations.
