According to environmentalist M.N. Jayachandran, the male elephant was spotted in the Anakkulam river over the past two days with a deep wound on its trunk. The river is a frequent watering hole for wild elephants. “It has a deep injury and cannot eat. The elephant was seen standing in the river on Friday; it occasionally moves into the nearby forest before returning to the water. If the Forest department fails to provide treatment, it could lead to the animal’s death,” Mr. Jayachandran said. He added that local residents have also spotted the injured elephant in the area. “We have already alerted Forest department officials and hope they will locate the animal to provide medical care,” he said. A senior Forest department official confirmed that the elephant is currently camping near the border of the Malayattoor reserve and the Mankulam forest division. “Staff from both Mankulam and Malayattoor are working to track the animal. It was seen in the Anakkulam river on Friday before retreating into the forest. Based on our observations, the elephant’s condition is currently stable. If necessary, the department will take steps to provide treatment,” the official stated.
