The long-standing woes of commuters in Kollam are nearing an end as the KSRTC bus station prepares for a complete modern overhaul. Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar will inaugurate the new terminal’s construction on March 4 and this development comes as a significant relief to the public, as the current bus stand has fallen into a severely dilapidated state. The aging structure has increasingly become a cause for concern, with its deteriorating condition posing a constant safety threat to both passengers and KSRTC staff. The transition to a new facility is being fueled by a strategic allocation of funds. M. Mukesh, MLA, has dedicated his entire Asset Development Fund of ₹5 crore for the 2025–26 period toward the new building. Additionally, following a request from the MLA, the Transport department has sanctioned an additional ₹10 crore to ensure the terminal meets international standards. This combined investment of ₹15 crore will see a state-of-the-art terminal rise at the site of the former Kollam bus garage, replacing the current hazardous environment with a safe, efficient hub. Designed by the State Public Works (Architecture) department, the new station will utilise advanced pre-fab technology, featuring durable steel structures and Kalzip roofing. Spanning 26,370 sq ft, the terminal is designed to be a comprehensive transit centre. It will include an air-conditioned waiting lounge, a restaurant, a cafeteria, shop rooms, and a health cafe. To support the workforce and operational needs, the complex will house an enquiry-cum-reservation centre, a depot office, and dedicated, modern restrooms for both male and female employees. The new design will allow 22 buses to be docked simultaneously, improving the flow of traffic within the station. With a target completion time of just six months, the project aims to provide a swift solution to the city’s transit needs. Furthermore, a separate proposal focused on leveraging the area’s tourism potential is currently under active consideration by KIIFB.
