A 46-year-old woman has alleged medical negligence during a hysterectomy at Thrissur General Hospital (GH), where an accidental scissor injury reportedly caused a tear in her urinary bladder, leading to severe complications.

The patient, Suja Perumal of Punnamparambu, underwent surgery on February 10 after she suffered heavy bleeding caused by a uterine tumour. During the procedure to remove the uterus, the bladder was allegedly cut, triggering acute distress, including persistent vomiting.

According to Suja, her condition rapidly deteriorated, and she was shifted by ambulance to Jubilee Mission Hospital for emergency corrective surgery. She remained unconscious for nearly 24 hours and was unable to consume food for 11 days, with severe swelling across the body.

After 24 days of hospitalisation, she returned home and recounted her ordeal. She said that doctors have advised her to take rest for at least four months and that she still struggles to walk without losing balance.

Suja, a home nurse by profession, stated that the doctor involved bore part of the treatment expenses. No formal complaint has been filed so far.
