Welfare Party of India (WPI) district president K.V. Safeersha has described the proposal to bifurcate Malappuram district, home to around 4.8 million people, as a fair and justified demand.

He was inaugurating a march organised by the Welfare Party to the District Medical Office here on Saturday (January 3, 2026), in protest against the alleged discrimination towards Malappuram district by the government in the appointment of doctors to government hospitals. “More districts are a must if we aim for the comprehensive development of Malappuram,” he said.

When the government appointed 202 specialist doctors across the state, only four were sent to Malappuram. “The government continues this discrimination towards Malappuram in all spheres,” Mr. Safeersha said.

He warned that the people of Malappuram might not tolerate the discrimination forever and added that they have the political power to check leaders motivated by communal or racial bias.

Welfare Party district general secretary Muneeb Karakkunnu, vice president Arif Chundayil, and Federation of Indian Trade Unions district president Khader Angadipuram also spoke.
