GIRI The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday (January 04, 2026) strongly condemned the United States (U.S.) for what it described as an “inhuman and imperialist attack” on Venezuela, accusing the Washington of acting like a “global aggressor” to protect the interests of multinational oil corporations. Addressing a protest organised by the CPIM here on Sunday, CPM State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao alleged that the U.S. attack was aimed at reasserting its dominance over Venezuela’s vast natural resources, including oil, gas, and gold reserves. Venezuela holds nearly 17 per cent of the world’s oil reserves, which, according to him, had prompted the U.S. corporations to push for military and political intervention. Mr. Srinivasa Rao strongly objected to the alleged detention and transfer of Venezuela’s democratically elected President Nicolás Maduro and his family to the United States, questioning under what authority the U.S. claimed the right to arrest and prosecute a sovereign nation’s leader. “Is America the world’s police or the ruler of the world?” he asked, calling for global condemnation of “an arrogant and illegal act”. Rejecting the U.S. claim that the action was linked to drug trafficking, he pointed out that Venezuela does not figure in the United Nations’ list of major drug-supplying countries. The CPIM leader also criticised the silence of the Indian government, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the External Affairs Ministry had failed to respond to the developments, calling it a matter of national shame. Further accusing major political parties, including the BJP and the Congress, of maintaining silence out of fear of the U.S. leadership, Mr. Srinivasa Rao urged all political parties in Andhra Pradesh, including the TDP and the YSRCP, to openly condemn the attack. Addressing the gathering, AIDWA national leader D. Ramadevi and CPM State Committee member Donepudi Kashinath also criticised the U.S. “imperialist designs” and warned that such actions undermine global democracy. They called upon peace-loving people and progressive forces to unite in solidarity with the Venezuelan people. Several CPM leaders and party members participated in the protest, reaffirming that the party would continue its agitation until the U.S. withdraws its actions against Venezuela and President Maduro is released.
