A 45-year-old farmer climbed a 400 KV high-tension power transmission tower in B.K. Halli, in Nagalamadike hobli of Pavagada taluk in Tumakuru district in Karnataka, allegedly in an attempt to commit suicide reportedly due to mounting debt.

The farmer, Gopalappa, is said to have been under severe financial stress. According to sources, he had borrowed around ₹6 lakh in 2025 to drill a borewell. Subsequently, he had taken more loans for his children’s marriage.

He was unable to repay the loans.

Unable to cope with alleged harassment by money-lenders, Gopalappa reportedly consumed alcohol and climbed a 400 KV solar power transmission tower, located on the outskirts of the village, and threatened to end his life.

Local residents working in nearby fields noticed him atop the high-tension tower. They alerted the police and fire services.

Tirumani police and personnel from the Pavagada Fire and Emergency Services station rushed to the spot. After sustained counselling, officials brought him down safely from a height of nearly 120 feet using harness belts and ropes.

Further inquiry is underway.
