Family of brain-dead youth from Mandya donates organs

An act of generosity by the family of a brain-dead youth from Chikka Mandya village in Mandya district, who consented to donate his organs, has enabled multiple patients to receive a new lease of life.

The organ retrieval was carried out at the Trauma and Emergency Care Centre (TECC) on the State-run Victoria Hospital campus, attached to the Bengaluru Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI). While the retrieval procedure was undertaken at the trauma centre, the organs were subsequently allocated for transplantation to eligible recipients as per protocol.

Victoria Hospital Medical Superintendent Deepak S. and TECC special officer Asima Banu said the coordinated efforts of the BMCRI team, TECC staff and the Jeevasaarthakate organ donation facilitation team ensured the smooth conduct of the retrieval process.

Bike accident

Darshan (name changed), a resident of Chikka Mandya in Kasaba hobli, sustained injuries after falling off his motorcycle on February 22. Initially returning home after the fall, his condition later worsened and he was admitted to a local hospital, where scans revealed severe internal brain haemorrhage. He was referred to Victoria Hospital’s TECC for advanced care.

Despite intensive treatment and repeated clinical assessments, he showed no signs of neurological recovery. After two days of observation and mandatory tests, a senior panel of doctors officially declared him brain dead in accordance with established medical protocols.

After counselling

Following counselling by the Jeevasaarthakate team, the grieving family took the decision to donate his organs.

The liver, kidneys, heart valves and other organs were retrieved at the trauma centre and allocated to patients in need, potentially benefitting six individuals. The transplant procedures for kidneys and liver were done at the Institute of Nephro Urology (INU) and Institute of Gastroenterology Sciences and Organ Transplant (IGOT) respectively while the heart valves were sent to another hospital.
