Six-month-old baby’s finger chopped during discharge at private hospital in Bengaluru

A six-month-old baby allegedly suffered a serious injury to his little finger due to medical negligence during the discharge process at Chinmaya Mission Hospital in Bengaluru on February 24.

Based on the complaint filed by the father of the baby boy, the Indiranagar police registered an FIR charging the nurse, doctor and hospital management under Section 125(b) (acts that endanger human life or personal safety through rash or negligent behaviour) of BNS.

According to the complaint, Vijay Kumar J. (29), a resident of Indiranagar, had admitted his six-month-old son, Balakumar, to the hospital on February 19. The baby was under treatment from February 19 to 24.

On February 24, around 3 p.m., the hospital decided to discharge the infant. While the discharge formalities were underway, a nurse, Anita, allegedly removed the IV drip. But, during the process of removing the dressing, she reportedly cut the baby’s little finger on the left hand, causing severe pain and injury.

The parents immediately rushed the baby for emergency care within the hospital, where treatment was administered.

However, the complainant alleged that, initially, the hospital staff informed them that the injury was minor, and would heal on its own as the child was very young.

Vijay Kumar has accused the nurse and the hospital administration of negligence, stating that the incident caused serious injury, pain, and trauma to his infant son. He has sought appropriate legal action against the nurse and the management of Chinmaya Mission Hospital.
