A total of 36,831 houses have been completed across Kozhikode district under the Livelihood Inclusion and Financial Empowerment (LIFE) Mission, a comprehensive scheme to provide housing to the landless and homeless people in the State.

“Since the initiative’s launch in 2016, the project has been rolled out in several stages to address the housing needs of various demographics across the region. In its initial phase, the mission focussed on reviving stalled projects, resulting in the completion of 6,484 houses that had previously remained unfinished under older schemes,” a press release said on Tuesday.

The second phase of the mission saw 5,150 beneficiaries who owned their own land receive the financial assistance required to finish their homes. This was followed by a third phase specifically targeting those without land, providing both plots and housing to 714 people.

Further progress was made through various departmental initiatives, where the SC, ST, and Fisheries departments oversaw the completion of 2,192 houses, while an additional 2,276 homes were constructed for prioritised beneficiaries on a specialised list, the release said.

The scope of the project expanded significantly following an extensive survey initiated in 2020. After rigorous official verification, a final list was published in 2022 containing 20,849 beneficiaries. From this list, 7,945 houses were completed within grama panchayats, while 8,930 houses were constructed in urban municipalities through the Life-PMAY scheme. Additionally, the PMAY-G category facilitated the completion of 2,384 homes in rural areas.

Efforts have also been closely integrated with the Extreme Poverty Alleviation Programme. Under the initiative, 584 land-owning beneficiaries received homes, and 172 of the 330 landless and homeless beneficiaries were provided houses.

“Public participation has also played a vital role through the ‘Manassodithiri Mannu’ campaign, which secured 100.75 cents of donated land for the cause. Looking ahead, construction is currently progressing at the Poolakkode Life Housing Complex in Chathamangalam grama panchayat, a project designed to provide modern resettlement for 44 families,” the release said.
