Periyar Tiger Reserve has initiated Phase III of All India Tiger Estimation 2025-26, marking a critical stage in the national exercise aimed at assessing the tiger population across the country. Phase III Tiger Monitoring will be launched from February 25. According to a press release, as part of this phase, the tiger habitats within Periyar Tiger Reserve have been systematically divided into grids of two square km each to ensure uniform spatial coverage. In each grid, two camera traps have been strategically installed to capture photographs of both flanks of passing tigers. This dual camera setup is essential for accurately recording the unique stripe patterns of individual animals, which enables precise identification.
