Russian drone strikes wound 5 in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia: emergency service

Overnight Russian drone strikes on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia wounded five people including a child, authorities said on Tuesday.

Ukraine marks the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion on Tuesday, with no end in sight to Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II.

The Ukrainian State Emergency Service (DSNS) said the attacks, which occurred late on Monday, targeted multiple sites across the regional centre.

“Five people, including one child, were injured as a result of the attacks,” the DSNS said.

At one location, a drone slammed into a factory building next to a nine-storey residential block, sparking a fire that spread over 200 square metres.

Nearby homes were also damaged, the DSNS added.

Another strike hit an open area close to residential districts, damaging five buildings and several cars parked in a courtyard.

Emergency responders deployed additional crews and equipment to extinguish fires and assess structural damage. “All services are working at the scene,” the DSNS said.

Zaporizhzhia, a major city near the southern frontline, faces near-daily Russian drone and missile attacks as Moscow continues to target urban areas and industrial facilities across Ukraine.

The drone attacks come on the heels of Russian strikes that killed three people in Zaporizhzhia and Odesa on Monday.
