The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has launched a public awareness campaign through pamphlets to highlight the role of citizens in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a growing public health concern driven largely by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics.

The campaign seeks to improve public understanding of the dangers associated with inappropriate antibiotic use and to encourage responsible behaviour among patients. According to the pamphlets, antibiotics should be taken only on the prescription of a qualified doctor and not on the advice of unqualified practitioners. They clearly state that antibiotics should not be used for viral illnesses, as these medicines are effective only against bacterial infections.

The material cautions that taking antibiotics when they are not required can lead to resistance, making future infections harder to treat. It also stresses the importance of completing the full prescribed course, even if symptoms improve early. Stopping treatment midway allows some bacteria to survive and develop resistance.

Officials said the pamphlets focus on explaining how AMR can turn common infections into serious health threats and increase the burden on the healthcare system. Alongside public education efforts, the DCA said it has intensified enforcement measures to curb the indiscriminate sale of antibiotics.
