Department of Brain and Neurology at Velammal Hospital has successfully treated over 800 patients using advanced neurological interventions.

During a press briefing here on Monday, medical experts highlighted how modern technology is turning the tide against stroke-related paralysis and brain haemorrhages.

Ganesh Kumar, Head of the Neurology Department, emphasised that time was the most critical factor in treating neurological emergencies. “By utilising immediate Angio procedures for brain haemorrhages and vascular ruptures, we can prevent long-term paralysis,” he stated.

Medical science identifies a ‘Golden Hour’—a window of four to six hours post-onset—during which immediate hospital admission can mean the difference between permanent disability and a full recovery.

Kavitha, Senior Consultant in Neurology, explained the BEFAST protocol, an essential tool for the public to identify stroke symptoms:

“Even if a patient arrives within 24 hours of the onset, modern interventions can still significantly minimize long-term defects,” Dr. Kavitha added.

“The hospital has pioneered the use of brain Angio and stenting, similar to cardiac procedures. However, unlike traditional heart stents, the specialised devices used for treating brain ruptures can often be removed immediately after the procedure, ensuring a smoother recovery with less discomfort for the patient,” the doctors noted.

Recognizing that surgery was only half the battle, they noted that the hospital has established a dedicated rehabilitation centre.

This facility provides integrated physiotherapy, along with physical and mental health support, to help patients transition back into their normal daily lives.

“Our goal is to provide world-class neurological care at affordable costs, ensuring that even the most complex stroke cases have a path back to normalcy,” said Dr. Kavitha.
