AIADMK councillor S. Sharmila of Ward 38 has alleged irregularities in drinking water maintenance in her ward under the Coimbatore Corporation. In a statement, she said the maintenance contract, officially in the name of N. Guruvayoorappan’s firm, is being handled by Deivam Surya, son of a DMK area secretary and deputy organiser of the DMK Youth Wing. She stated that pipelines are leaking, borewell motors are malfunctioning, and valves are poorly maintained, with over 100 pipeline leaks reported in recent months. She alleged that no maintenance work had been carried out, yet bills were submitted to the Corporation for work not executed, causing disruption in water supply. Ms. Sharmila also claimed that development work in her ward is being deliberately stalled ahead of elections and urged the public and senior Corporation officials to take note and ensure corrective action. Corporation officials, however, said the contractor firm faced labour shortage, which has now been resolved, and repair works are currently ongoing.
