A 65-year-old farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant while guarding his maize field at Kadambur hills in Erode on Sunday (February 22, 2026) night.

The deceased was identified as Madesami, a resident of Kaadu Pasuvan Maalam village. He is survived by his wife, Saratha. According to the police, Madesami had been keeping a night watch at his maize field as the crop was ready for harvest. Around midnight, a lone elephant that had strayed out of the forest entered the field. On hearing the noise, Madesami woke up and noticed the elephant. He reportedly attempted to drive the animal away. However, the elephant turned aggressive and chased him. In an attempt to escape, he slipped and fell in the field. The elephant caught up with him and trampled him to death on the spot.

Farmers in the vicinity, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the area and raised an alarm. The elephant later retreated into the forest. Forest Department personnel and the police were informed. The body was recovered and sent to the Government Hospital in Sathyamangalam for post-mortem examination.
