The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony, which took place on Sunday (February 22, 2026), was interrupted for a while due to strong words used by John Davidson, a man who lives with Tourette’s Syndrome. Davidson was seated inside London’s Royal Festival Hall where the ceremony took place and his involuntary tics were picked up by microphones.

Host Alan Cumming addressed these disruptions as he stopped the awards night twice to speak to the audience after loud words were heard during the live ceremony. He later explained that the sounds came from Davidson.

As per CNN, before the ceremony, announcements were made to the audience that tics or involuntary swearing could occur. Davidson also told the publication that he was worried about the involuntary tics that get triggered as part of his condition.

Some of the remarks caused presenters and winners to take pauses while speaking on stage. During the opening part of the ceremony, Davidson shouted words like “boring” and “f*k off” while BAFTA chair Sara Putt was addressing the audience. Later, while Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were announcing the Best Visual Effects award forAvatar: Fire and Ash, another offensive remark was heard on the broadcast.

In order to address these disruptions, Cumming spoke to the audience and reminded them that Tourette Syndrome was a disability which causes involuntary tics. He also thanked everyone for being understanding and for helping to keep the space respectful for all. “We apologize if you are offended tonight,” he said.

At one point, Davidson was seen leaving the auditorium.

Davidson is known for widely campaigning about Tourette’s syndrome. He has worked for years to raise awareness and support others with the condition. In 2018, he received an honor from Queen Elizabeth II for his efforts. He also featured in the 1989 documentary John’s Not Mad.

The film, I Swear, starring Robert Aramayo depicted the life of Davidson and was nominated for BAFTA Award. Aramayo went on to win the Best Actor award for his performance in the film.
