Elimination of JeM’s Saifullah terror group displays high standards of tactical precision: Major General A.P.S. Bal

The Army on Monday (February 23, 2026) said the security forces displayed the high standards of tactical precision by eliminating the Jaish-e-Muhammad’s (JeM) Saifullah terror group operating in the upper reaches of the Kishtwar-Doda belt in the Chenab valley.

“Displaying high standards of tactical precision, seamless inter-agency coordination and resolute operational efficiency, security forces, including J&K Police and CRPF, rigorously pursued the terrorist group in the challenging and rugged terrain and harsh weather conditions,” Major General A.P.S. Bal, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Counter-Insurgency Force (CIF), said in a press conference. He was accompanied by Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, B.S. Tuti.

The Army on Sunday (February 22) gunned down three terrorists on the steep slopes of a rugged mountain, which was cordoned off by the security forces on the night of February 21. The major terror group operating in the area was being relentlessly pursued by the security forces. Operations were launched in April-May last year and were sustained despite hy rains and snow during winters.

“Successful contact with the group resulted in the elimination of three hardcore terrorists in April 2025. However, the latest of the group, code name Saifullah, along with his close associate code name Adil and two other terrorists were surviving and on the run,” GOC Bal said.

The Army said the security forces persisted in this long-duration and large-scale operation, which spanned over a month. “Reinforcements, including special forces, were quickly mobilised. The Army utilised real-time surveillance drones and night vision equipment to track and contain terrorist movement, preventing any potential escape,” said GOC Bal.

GOC Bal said the troops displayed exceptional tactical precision and swiftness, ensuring zero casualties among their own personnel. “The role of Army-trained dog Tyson needs a special mention, who entered the Dhok to ascertain the presence of terrorists. Terrorists opened fire, during which Tyson was injured,” said GOC Bal.

The operation reflected seamless coordination between the Army, CRPF and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, notably the Special Operations Group (SOG), the Army said.

According to the security forces, six Pakistan-sponsored terrorists were killed over the past 20 days in Kishtwar-Udhampur.

“The six JeM terrorists were eliminated in February in separate operations across the Udhampur and Kishtwar sectors, indicating sustained pressure across the Udhampur–Kishtwar belt,” said GOC Bal. “We will continue to neutralise terrorists wherever they operate in our area of responsibility,” he added.
