A delegation of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), comprising party leaders and farmers, met Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy and submitted a memorandum on January 3. It sought the fulfilment of various demands related to the farming community in the Mysuru region.

The delegation highlighted the problems faced by farmers and sought the Deputy Commissioner’s intervention to address the concerns at the earliest.

Acting on an appeal from the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, KPCC spokesperson M. Lakshmana led the delegation and discussed the issues with Mr. Reddy, urging him to issue necessary directions to the officials concerned.

The delegation alleged that immediate compensation is not being provided to farmers whose crops are getting destroyed by wild animals. It demanded immediate measures to address the problems faced by farmers in H.D. Kote and Hunsur taluks, where tiger attacks have been reported in recent months, alleging that no concrete steps had been taken so far.

In the memorandum, the KPCC said tobacco farmers are not receiving remunerative prices for their produce and demanded that fertilisers be made available to farmers in a timely manner.

Mr. Lakshmana also alleged that some Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs) are not extending government benefits to farmers and their family members. He said there is an urgent need to set up a helpline for farmers.

He further raised concerns over microfinance companies allegedly harassing farmers in the name of loan recovery.
