Gunshots were allegedly fired at a student outside the Birla hostel at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), officials said on Sunday (February 22, 2026). Roshan Mishra, a third-year Bachelor of Arts student, claimed three persons arrived on a motorcycle and suddenly opened fire when he was standing outside the hostel on Saturday (February 21) night. No one was injured in the incident.

“We have registered a case against five individuals at the Lanka police station and efforts are underway to catch them,” said the police. Police teams from several stations, along with the outpost in-charge of BHU, rushed to the spot.

Mr. Mishra handed over to the police four empty cartridges allegedly used in the firing at him. The police believed the alleged incident is the result of an old rivalry between two students’ groups.

After the incident, dozens of students staged a protest at the gate of the Birla hostel, pushing for strictest action against those involved in the attack as well as against the authorities for allegedly failing to ensure proper security arrangements on the premises. The university administration and police officials assured students of proper action, leading to the end of the protest.
