Chandradandu Prakash Naidu, chairman of the Meat Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited, expressed concern over the improper disposal of chicken waste by retail outlets, thereby exposing residents to a potentially hazardous situation.

On Sunday, he conducted surprise checks at several retail meat outlets in Tirupati, and found that the outlets were violating norms by keeping dead chicken for sale. The chairman seized the meat and warned the shopkeepers that their trade licenses would be cancelled, if they did not mend their ways. He also imposed a hefty fine on the erring outlets.

He cautioned the outlets and asked them to maintain proper shelf-life of the meat in refrigerators. He also stressed that butchers should wear gloves while handling meat products. And asked shops to sterilise the meat with hot water before using, due to the bird flu cases in the district.

Food safety officer Jagadish, health officer Yuva Avinash, sanitary official C. Chenchaiah accompanied Mr. Naidu.
