Three more garbage vulnerable points transformed into green zone in Tiruchi

Tiruchi Corporation has transformed three more garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) across the city into beautified public spaces as part of its ongoing sanitation drive.

A garbage hotspot near Nagappa Swamy Kovil in Kattur, Ward 39, under Zone III, has been transformed into a visually appealing spot with vibrant wall murals. The location, situated near a ration shop and close to a transformer, had long been used as a mini dumping site by residents.

Similarly, another vulnerable point at Keelapudur Main Road, near the clock tower corner in Ward 34 under Zone II, has been reclaimed. The site had witnessed indiscriminate dumping of household waste, with cattle frequently seen rummaging through the garbage. The Corporation fenced the area and adorned the walls with mural paintings to prevent further dumping and improve the surroundings.

Meanwhile, beautification work is underway at a garbage hotspot adjacent to a private school in Woraiyur in Ward 9 under Zone V. The work is expected to be completed within a week, according to a Corporation official.

In addition, four more hotspots in Wards 9, 12, 32 and 64 have been identified for transformation in the coming months.

The reclaimed sites, which had long served as informal dumping grounds, are being redeveloped with greenery to discourage littering and open urination while creating cleaner and aesthetically pleasing public spaces. By converting garbage-prone areas into mini green zones, the civic body aims to curb waste accumulation and improve air quality.

The initiative is being implemented by the private agency managing the city’s waste collection. Depending on available space, some sites have been developed into mini gardens and fenced to protect greenery, while others feature wall murals and decorative elements.

Since September 2023, the civic body has reclaimed and transformed 64 garbage hotspots across residential and commercial areas in all five zones of the city. Of these, 10 are in Zone I, 12 in Zone II, five in Zone III, nine in Zone IV, and 28 in Zone V. Officials said the reclaimed spots are being monitored round the clock to ensure that they are not misused again.
