The Government Railway Police (GRP) has seized a consignment of 21 kg of ganja in Tirupathi – Chikkamagaluru Express train at Katpadi railway station in Vellore on Saturday.

Police said that as part of security measures, a team of GRP police personnel was conducting surprise checks in trains at the railway station.

The team searched the coaches of the express train when they found the suspect and passenger, Mohammed Aseem, a native of Kerala, with a tourist bag in the general compartment of the train. When police checked the bag, they found seven bundles of ganja in them.

Initial inquiry revealed that the suspect Aseem had bought ganja from drug peddlers in Andhra Pradesh to sell in retail to individuals and workers at key towns and industrial centres in the State. A case has been registered by Katpadi GRP. Arrested person was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
