The Central government is expected to approve ₹9 crore for the jewellery park that the Tamil Nadu government is developing in Coimbatore. An official of the State government told The Hindu on Saturday (February 21, 2026) that the Tamil Nadu government sent a proposal to the Centre in November last year and it is expected to be approved soon. The State government announced in the recent interim budget that it has allocated ₹81 crore for the jewellery park. The official said the first phase of the work will be done at ₹58 crore during which five floors will be constructed. “The tender is finalised and once the Centre approves its contribution for construction of the building, works will start,” the official said. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid foundation for the park in October last year. The park, to be developed on 2.46 acres, is estimated to cost ₹126.12 crore in total, and will benefit thousands of goldsmiths and jewellery sector stakeholders in the region. S.M. Kamal Hasan, president of the Coimbatore Goldsmiths’ Association, said initially the Centre had approved a ₹15 crore project to set up a common facility centre for the goldsmiths here. The Centre was to disburse ₹11.8 crore for that. “The earlier project would have benefited only a small number of goldsmiths. The jewellery park that will come up at Kurichi will benefit a large number of stakeholders in the jewellery sector,” he said.
