The scheme has been implemented at a cost of ₹1,536.31 crore under Jal Jeevan Mission and State government funds. The scheme has been designed to provide 2 MLD of water with Vaigai river as source to the 867 habitations and SIPCOT industrial estate. The industrial estate has made a contribution of ₹22.76 crore. It would serve the present population of 7.17 lakh people and the peak population of 10.93 lakh in 2054. It would provide 55 litres of water per person per day (LPCD). Water is drawn through collection well downstream Vaigai dam and is pumped for 3.57 km to the water treatment plant at Kullapuram. The plant is designed to treat 60 million litres of water a day. The treated water is collected in a main balancing water storage tank with a capacity of 25 lakh litres and then is drawn through gravity to 16 balancing water tanks and 12 ground level tanks and 112 zonal balancing water tanks through which water is filled in newly-built 286 overhead tanks and 1,135 existing tanks. Main pipelines have been laid for 1,860.49 km. A statement said that efforts were being made to supply the water to the houses through Rural Development Department.
