Vice President of India C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, and Governor R.N. Ravi on Saturday (January 3, 2026) paid tributes to freedom fighters Rani Velu Nachiyar of Sivaganga and Veerapandiya Kattabomman of Panchalankurichi on their birth anniversaries.

In a post on X, Mr. Radhakrishnan described Rani Velu Nachiyar as an enduring icon of women’s strength and leadership and one of India’s earliest woman freedom fighters. He also said she was a courageous ruler and a visionary leader who stood steadfast against colonial domination, exemplifying valour, strategic acumen, and exceptional leadership.

The Vice President also described Veerapandiya Kattabomman as a valiant son of the soil whose courage and defiance against colonial oppression became a beacon of India’s freedom movement.

Mr. Modi, in his tribute, said Rani Velu Nachiyar is remembered as one of India’s most valiant warriors who embodied courage and tactical mastery. She rose against colonial oppression and asserted the right of Indians to govern themselves. Her commitment to good governance and cultural pride was also admirable. Her sacrifice and visionary leadership would continue to motivate generations, he added.

Mr. Ravi paid floral tributes to the decorated portraits of Rani Velu Nachiyar and Veerapandiya Kattabomman at Lok Bhavan.

Mr. Stalin, in his tribute, said that “both the leaders had shown, even then, to those who thought that threats would make us submit, that Tamil Nadu will resist.” He said his government would continue to carry the legacy of Tamil Nadu’s great personalities to every corner of the world.
