The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday issued notice to Delhi police in a case of alleged physical and sexual assault on a woman journalist by a mob while she was on an assignment to cover a students’ protest against the UGC regulations on the North Campus of Delhi University.

According to reports, the incident took place on February 13 when the protesters, after identifying the journalist’s caste, began assaulting her. The victim also alleged that some people threatened to parade her naked before she lost consciousness, the NHRC communique said.

It further cited media reports that stated that the victim has alleged that she was specifically targeted because of her caste. She escaped her ordeal with the help of some faculty and women police personnel. 

Observing that the case raises serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim, the commission, in a notice to Delhi Police Commissioner, called for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
