The police on Thursday arrested a man on charge of murdering a woman and setting fire to her body near Thudiyalur.

The suspect has been identified as Tamilselvan (29), a school bus driver from Sengalipalayam near Thudiyalur.

The police said that Anitha (32) of Ramanathapuram district, who lived in Tamilselvan’s neighbourhood, was found dead at Vattamalaipalayam near Thudiyalur on Wednesday evening. The body, which was charred partially, also bore injuries.

After tracing the identity of the woman, the police zeroed in on Tamilselvan, who had developed an extramarital affair with her. The woman had separated from her husband and had settled in Coimbatore, the police said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman demanded Tamilselvan to marry her, claiming that she had conceived out of their relationship. According to the police, Tamilselvan took her to a deserted place at Vattamalaipalayam on Wednesday and beat her to death following an argument. He attempted to burn her body using petrol from his two-wheeler. Further investigation is on.
