A total of 158 panchayat secretaries have been placed under suspension in Tiruchi district for failing to report for duty. They were among those who participated in a number of protests pressing various demands since January. According to sources, of the 404 panchayat secretaries in the district, 158 failed to turn up for duty for more than a month without any valid reason. They did not apply for leave. Acting on the direction of Collector V. Saravanan, the respective Block Development Officers of the panchayat unions have placed 158 panchayat secretaries under suspension.
