Union Ministry of Labour and Employment has given in-principle approval to establish the nation’s first Ayurveda Medical College under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)in Ezhukone, Kollam, said Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, following a meeting in Delhi with Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. “The assurance was given after explaining the strategic advantages of the Ezhukone site and the growing demand for integrated healthcare in the region. A proposal regarding the existing infrastructure and the State’s healthcare requirements has been submitted and the project will be formally considered in the upcoming ESIC board of directors meeting,” said Mr. Suresh. The proposed medical college will be built on land already owned by the ESI Corporation in Ezhukone. By combining Ayurvedic treatment with formal medical education, the centre is envisioned as a model institution that will provide specialised traditional care to the working class and their families. “This initiative is expected to bring national recognition to Kerala’s rich Ayurvedic heritage while significantly expanding the scope of worker welfare schemes under the ESIC,” he added. Beyond its clinical impact, the project is expected to play a key role in regional development by transforming Ezhukone into a prominent national hub for health education and research.
