The Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP) is all set to start the scientific disposal of the legacy waste at the Njeliyanparamba dumping yard in Kozhikode city soon.

A release from the KSWMP said on Thursday (February 19, 2026) that the biomining and bioremediation project aims to clear decades’ worth of accumulated waste and reclaim 12.6 acres of land from the 17.5-acre site. Through biomining, the accumulated waste will be categorised and separated into reusable components such as soil, plastic, metal, and wood. These materials will then be handled and disposed of according to legal and scientific environmental standards.

After this, a significant portion of the recovered land will be handed over to Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited for the establishment of a modern compressed biogas plant. Although the Kozhikode Corporation had earlier attempted other waste management schemes, they were unsuccessful.
