The Nelamangala Town police have arrested a 43-year-old man for killing her neighbour to rob her gold chain.

The victim, Shobha, 68, was reportedly found murdered at her residence. Based on a complaint lodged by her nephew Naveen Gupta, the police launched an investigation. The CCTV footage from the locality was analysed, which helped officers zero in on Shivakumar, a provision store owner and the victim’s neighbour.

The police said Shivakumar had incurred huge debts due to his vices and was under financial distress. Aware that Shobha was living alone while caring for her bedridden husband and wore a gold chain worth several lakhs, he allegedly plotted the crime to rob her jewellery.

According to the police, Shivakumar closely monitored her movements and gained entry into her house under the pretext of a casual conversation. He then allegedly stabbed her to death and fled with the gold chain.

The police arrested Shivakumar within six hours of the incident. During sustained questioning, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime. The police recovered the gold chain and the weapon used in the offence.
