A Delhi court on Wednesday dismissed the anticipatory bail pleas of two contractors against whom arrest warrants were issued after a 25-year-old biker died when he fell into a pit dug by the Delhi Jal Board in Janakpuri for sewer work earlier this month. Additional Sessions Judge Harleen Kaur of the Dwarka Courts was hearing the applications filed by Himanshu Gupta and Kavish Gupta. Arrest warrants were issued against them on February 9. The court also turned down the regular bail application of another accused, subcontractor Rajesh Kumar Prajapati, who has been arrested in the case. The judge observed that the “seriousness of the offence and its wider impact on society weighed against granting relief”. On February 11, the court had granted interim protection to the two accused contractors till Wednesday, directing authorities not to take any coercive action against them until the next date of hearing in the case. Kamal Dhyani, who worked at a private bank in Rohini, was returning home on the intervening night of February 5 and 6 when he fell into the pit, sustaining fatal injuries. Apart from Mr. Prajapati, the police also arrested a 23-year-old labourer, Yogesh. Mr. Prajapati allegedly failed to inform officials about the accident, delaying emergency response. Mr. Yogesh allegedly neither alerted authorities nor provided accurate information to the victim’s family when they came searching for him. Three DJB officials have been suspended pending investigation into the incident.
