Union Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivas Varma on Wednesday announced that the works of the bridge proposed across Vasista, a branch of the Godavari river, would begin soon.

The one-kilometre-long bridge connects Narsapuram town in West Godavari district to Sakhinetipalli Lanka in Dr. B. R. Ambedkara Konaseema district. At present, people from these two districts cross the river by punt.

Proposed in 2008, the bhumi puja was performed for the bridge by all the successive Chief Ministers of united Andhra Pradesh. However, the construction of the bridge, which is part of the National Highway-216 project was halted after private landowners moved the court over the land acquisition for the highway road.

Speaking to newsmen at a press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Srinivas Varma said: “All the legal hurdles to speed up the bridge across Vasista branch have been cleared. Once commissioned, the entire region of Konaseema, West Godavari and erstwhile Krishna districts will have better connectivity”.
