K.A. Salim, well-known hematologist, and founder of the Department of Hematology at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, passed away at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. He was 86. Dr. Salim is one of the leading hematologists in the country and a pioneer in the field of research on blood disorders. According to sources, he graduated in 1963 and got his MD in General Medicine in 1966 from the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. Dr. Salim later obtained higher degrees from the Royal College of Physicians in 1978 and the Royal College of Pathologists in 1982, both in London, UK. He is also a recipient of other international fellowships. As a teacher, he is known to be a mentor of a large number of medical professionals throughout his career across various government medical colleges in the State. Dr. Salim later worked with the College of Medicine at King Khalid University in Soudi Arabia as an Associate Professor. His wife, Pathummal, predeceased him. He has four sons. The last rites will be held at Juma Masjid, Petta, in the State capital, on Thursday.
