An 18-year-old second PU student allegedly died by suicide by jumping from the second floor of his college building in Kanakapura town on Tuesday after reportedly being upset over repeated advice from his parents to focus on studies.

The incident occurred at Aditya PU College. The deceased has been identified as Srinivas, 18, son of Mahadeva Prabhu, a bakery owner at Sante Kodihalli.

The family originally hails from Dantalli village in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district. Srinivas was pursuing Commerce.

According to the police, Srinivas had not been concentrating on his studies despite the examinations approaching and was reportedly spending more time on his mobile phone. Concerned about his academic preparation, his parents reprimanded him and had been regularly advising him to study well.

Police said that Srinivas would often remain silent and withdrawn after being counselled by his parents.

On Tuesday, he attended all his classes as usual. Around 5.20 p.m., after college hours, he allegedly went to the second floor of the building and jumped. College staff immediately rushed him to hospital. He was later shifted to another hospital in Bengaluru. However, he succumbed around 11.30 p.m.

Police have registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR). After post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the family.

Srinivas is survived by his parents and a sister.
