The Coimbatore Corporation has proposed to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for revamping an additional 6-km stretch of the Sanganoor canal between Kanuvai and Mettupalayam Road.

The proposal is part of efforts to extend the canal improvement works, which include removal of encroachments, restoration of the canal’s width and formation of roads on both sides.

Under the revamp project, the initial plan covers the stretch from Mettupalayam Road to Trichy Road and has been divided into four packages. The first package, now under execution at an estimated cost of ₹49 crore, covers a 2.5-km stretch from Mettupalayam Road to the Rathinapuri bridge. The second package covers the stretch from Rathinapuri bridge to Sathyamangalam Road, the third from Sathyamangalam Road to Avinashi Road, and the fourth from Avinashi Road to Trichy Road.

A senior official said work under the first package is under way, with retaining walls constructed and road work completed for about 2 km. The remaining stretches on both sides are pending due to encroachments. Notices have been issued to 10 houses to vacate the area and shift to tenements allotted by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board.

The official said tentative DPRs for the second, third and fourth packages, estimated at ₹294 crore, have been submitted to the Directorate of Municipal Administration for approval. A comprehensive DPR will be submitted after completing a socio-economic survey, which will include the cost of providing alternate housing.

The Corporation has also decided to include the stretch from Kanuvai to Mettupalayam Road in the project. Officials said this would provide direct connectivity between the two areas over a length of around 6 km. Surveys for the stretch have begun and a DPR will be prepared after they are completed.
