iORTA, a consortium of transplant physicians and surgeons dedicated to advancing organ transplant care in India, inaugurated its Kids Kidney Transplant Clinic (KiTES) at City Hospital in Tiruchi on Wednesday.

The clinic aims to provide comprehensive kidney transplant services to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Prabhu Kanchi, lead transplant nephrologist – iORTA, said, “Approximately 49,000 children per million are affected by chronic kidney disease, and for many of them, progression to end-stage renal disease {ESRD} becomes life-threatening. Without timely intervention, these children face prolonged dialysis, severe developmental stunting and premature mortality. In Tamil Nadu alone, nearly 750 new children develop kidney failure every year. KiTES is our commitment to intervene early, provide definitive treatment through transplantation, and restore the promise of a healthy childhood.”

KiTES will deliver a paediatric kidney transplant pathway covering clinical evaluation, donor work-up, transplant surgery, and structured post-transplant follow-up care. The iORTA team has successfully carried out over 1,000 transplants over a decade of service.

V. Balakrishnan, Inspector General of Police, Central Zone – Tiruchi, and T.N. Janakiram, managing director – Royal Pearl Group of Hospitals, were present at the inauguration ceremony.
