According to officials, large quantities of soil, rocks and uprooted trees fell onto the road around 6 a.m. Residents said that the border areas of Idukki district experienced extremely heavy rainfall throughout the morning. The debris completely disrupted traffic on the Munnar-Bodimettu stretch for nearly two hours. The mudslip occurred shortly after vehicles carrying cardamom plantation workers from Tamil Nadu had passed through the area. Traffic was resumed on the route later in the morning after authorities cleared the debris from the stretch.
