Under the Namakku Naame scheme, works worth ₹21.40 crore have been carried out in Salem Corporation.

The Namakku Naame scheme was launched in September 2021 by the State Government to increase public participation in creating and maintaining infrastructures in urban local bodies. Under this scheme, works including renovation of waterbodies, construction/renovation of schools, colleges, hospitals, urban primary health centres, bridges, culverts, stormwater drains, community/public toilets, parks, and installation of street lights, and CCTV cameras are undertaken.

The minimum public contribution for any identified work except renovation of waterbodies should be one-third of the estimated value. For waterbodies, the minimum public contribution should be 50%. There is no upper limit for public contribution.

With public contribution, 121 works, worth ₹21.40 crore, including laying of roads, additional building for schools, sewage channels, and stormwater drains, were carried out in the Corporation.

Salem Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan said that the public supports the scheme. As one-third of the fund is provided by the public, the work are completed quickly. If the public contributes 50% for a work, they themselves shall carry out the work with technical supervision from the Corporation.

He added that in areas where people belonging to SC/ST are living in large numbers, they shall contribute one-fifth of the project estimation cost. In the Corporation, the public contributes mostly for the construction of sewage channels and stormwater drains. If the public contributes 50% or above for a work, the project shall be started immediately, the Commissioner said.
