A Kurnool court on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a murder case that happened in 2021.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikrant Patil, Harijan Handri Devadasu of B. Agraharam village in Gonegandla mandal, was in relationship with a woman, Harijan Lakshmi, of Byluppala village. A suspicious Devadasu used to physically harass Lakshmi, questioning her character.

In June 2021, Lakshmi’s mother, Krishnamma, lodged a complaint with the Gonegandla police, stating that her daughter went missing after leaving the house to attend a relatives’ marriage. During questioning, Devadasu admitted to have taken Lakshmi to a place of worship in Guntakal on a motorcycle and killed her near Kasapuram. After strangling Lakshmi to death, Devadasu took petrol from his bike, poured it on her body and set it on fire. He then fled with the gold and silver ornaments on her body.

The burnt body parts were subjected to DNA sampling and it was later identified as that of Lakshmi. Police produced technical and scientific evidences before the court during trial.

Adoni Additional District Judge P.J. Sudha convicted and sentenced Devadasu to life imprisonment on Monday.
