Purandeswari on Monday announced that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned ₹135 crore for a drinking water project in Rajamahendravaram City under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT) Scheme. The five-year scheme expires in the financial year 2025-26. Access to safe drinking water, management of sewage water remain the prime challenges of the Rajamahendravaram city. The source points, from where water from Godavari river is being drawn for purification, have been under scrutiny for the past few years as they are located downstream of the cemetery and Andhra Paper Mill, from where effluents and wastewater are being released into the river. On Monday, Ms. Purandeswari and Rajamahendravaram City MLA Adireddy Srinivas reviewed the ongoing projects including the drinking water project. The duo also discussed the proposed sports infrastructure facilities for which ₹13.76 crore had been sanctioned under the Khelo Indian Scheme. Later, tobacco farmers felicitated Ms. Purandeswari marking the exemption of stamp duty for unbranded tobacco by the Centre with effect from February.
