Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the State government has successfully implemented development projects worth ₹1,00,000 crore through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) in 10 years.

Speaking at the inauguration of 15 development projects, including a new surgical block, at the Government Medical College, Kottayam, on Monday, Mr. Vijayan noted that during the previous government’s tenure, the KIIFB had targeted development projects worth ₹50,000 crore, which eventually rose to ₹62,000 crore. Under the current government, this figure has reached ₹1,00,000 crore.

“The health sector in Kerala has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the past decade. Today, the State ranks better than even highly developed countries in neonatal and maternal mortality rates, thanks to extensive facilities and quality services. The contribution of doctors and health care staff has been immense. Alongside government hospitals, many private hospitals also operate at high standards, providing not only profit-driven services but also quality care,” he said.

At the same time, the Chief Minister pointed out that some private hospitals, known for their focus on profit, have attracted global corporations. While their facilities remain largely unchanged, the cost of treatment has increased significantly. “In this context, strengthening the public health care sector is essential. The government is working to elevate public hospitals to a level where they can compete with the best private institutions,” he added.

The event, held on the medical college campus, was presided over by Health, Women and Child Development Minister Veena George. Speaking at the function, she highlighted that extensive infrastructural development has been implemented across all medical colleges in the State, ensuring better health care access for all.

Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan, who welcomed the gathering, said that development projects worth ₹1,150 crore have been completed at the Kottayam Medical College over the past decade, made possible with support from KIIFB.

The ₹283.60-crore worth development projects inaugurated at the medical college on Monday include a pathology lab, phase I of the paramedical hostel, a 32-slice CT scanning system in the Cancer Block, a renovated main entrance, a Maternal and Neonatal Care Unit in the Gynecology department, and a skin bank. During the ceremony, foundation stone was also laid for a new toilet block in the ABC Block, to be constructed at a cost of ₹74 lakh.
