India has nominated Om Birla to represent the country at the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman as Prime Minister on February 17 in Dhaka. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declined the invitation due to prior commitments, including engagements with French President Emmanuel Macron. Rahman’s appointment follows the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024. Birla’s participation signals India’s intent to maintain continuity in bilateral ties, even as New Delhi cautiously evaluates its approach toward the new BNP-led government amid recent diplomatic strains.
