Class X students of CBSE schools in the city are set to face the new format of two-board exams this year, as they prepare to take the board exams starting Tuesday. “There is no difference in the preparation of our students, as it is compulsory for them to write the first set of examinations. We completed our portions in November, giving them ample time to prepare for the upcoming exams,” said Lakshmi Prabha, principal, Prasan Vidya Mandir. Last year, CBSE announced that the Class X board exams would be held twice from the academic year 2025-2026, giving its students a chance to improve their scores. The first set of exams would take place in February, and once the results are declared, the second set of exams will be held in May. Students who wish to take up the second-set exams can register through their school after the results are declared. They can take the second set of exams in any three subjects, except for language. “It is purely for aspirational reasons… Students who want to improve their scores can definitely take up the second set of exams. It will only build self-esteem,” said Revathy Parameswaran, principal, P.S. Senior Secondary School, Mylapore. However, teachers say the Class X scores do not have much of an impact on the student’s future studies. “As they should be accommodated in the same school in their preferred choice of stream as per the CBSE’s instructions, the concept of two-board exams is not necessary. In Class XII, there would be a need [for good scores], but otherwise, the students are assured of a seat in their school,” Ms. Lakshmi said. Noting that while the schools in the city are prepared for any outcome, principal of KRM Public School D.P. Sivasakti Balan said they left it to the students and parents to make a call on taking the second set of exams. “The parents and students have been briefed. The only worry is regarding the teachers’ availability as they lose their time twice over,” he added.
