Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta has urged the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment to expedite the process of taking over of ESI Hospital in Mangaluru by the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).

In a letter to Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Labour and Employment, on February 13, 2026 Capt. Chowta said, “The ESI Hospital in Mangaluru is a 100-bed facility serving approximately 2.5 lakh insured persons across Dakshina Kannada and adjoining districts. However, the hospital remains severely understaffed, affecting service delivery. Early ESIC takeover is essential to ensure adequate staffing, improved administration, better infrastructure maintenance, and optimal utilisation of the facility in line with the objectives of the ESI Scheme. I urge the Ministry to kindly expedite all necessary approvals at the earliest to enable the swift take over of the ESI Hospital in the larger interest of insured beneficiaries and their families.”

The MP said that as required, Karnataka government has constituted Karnataka ESI Society to enable the ESIC to take over the ESI Hospital in Mangaluru.

Capt. Chowta said that earlier he met Ashok Kumar Singh, Director General, ESIC, on February 6, 2025 to apprise him of the persistent challenges faced by the ESI Hospital. “During the meeting, the need for ESIC to assume direct control and management of the hospital was discussed to ensure efficient administration, proper maintenance and improved healthcare delivery to insured beneficiaries,” the letter said.
